Welcome To Our Summer Session 1(June 12-22) Learning Experience Page!

This page was created for parents and students in my Horizons For Youth Classes at Northampton Community College. My name is Karen Pasquel and I am the instructor for this class and creator of this page. Thanks for stopping by!

We will work with strategies to help aid comprehension, vocabulary, and develop our writing skills. We will be reading and writing throughout our day using short stories, fables, poetry, journals, and the writing process. I plan to incorporate a variety of techniques using the various learning modalities. We will have visual, auditory, and movement experiences to help enhance the overall learning environment!

Class Reading & Writing Objectives Week of: June 12-June 22 * To assess prior knowledge and interests.
* To informally assess using Reading Inventories and writing samples.
To practice oral reading expression paying attention to print and story details (such as, but not limited to) punctuation, plot, problem and resolution and character analysis.
* To engage prior knowledge strategies and use active reading strategies to help develop comprehension skills of fiction and nonfiction selections.
To receive dirrect instruction in comprehension strategies such as story mapping, framing, plot analysis, main idea and finding the purpose of non-fiction selections.
*To incorporate a variety of writing ideas including writing prompts, frames, and poetry.
* To study words using parts: prefix, root, and suffix parts.
* Practice (phonics) phonetic elements in our word studies through patterns, rules, and the use of semantics (meaning/comprehension)

Reading & Writing Learning Activities Week of: June 12 1. Getting to Know one another games and activities
2. Informal Reading Inventories and writing samples
3.Using descriptives to expand writing
4. Word study-Using Our Names and using letter tiles. Sorting words for phonetic patterns.
5.Pre-reading and Comprehension techniques with fiction & non-fiction passages
Ask you child about the following stories:
1.)Little Chick's Breakfast(Begin on Tuesday)
2. Police Officer k-9 Knows Her Job(Begin on Wednesday)and finding the Main Idea
3.)The Wind In The Willows
(Begin on Tuesday)
4. Happy Birthday Danny & The Dinosaur-Comprehension
5. Comparing Notes On Field Hockey-Main Idea/inferences
Making Words/Phonics Study
We will be studying root words & ending patterns.
We will also be using letter cards to create words and study patterns (phonics)using:Tuesday /oo/,/oy/,/ow/,/er/,/ear/,/re/
Wednesday /au/, /gh/,/ed/, /s/ endings
Thursday:/ark/,/an/, /ank/, /ing/
Daily-The use of homophones, prefix and suffix endings for example: (be, -er,-ing, etc.)

Reading & writing Activities Week of: June 19 Making Words/Phonics block/Sentence editing
Independent/Guided Reading Writing/"The Wind In The Willows"-whole class literature study
Week of June 19: MondayWorking with: /ack/, /er/, and the silent "e" long vowels rule- With editing /ea/,/th/,/er/- questions(asking sentences)
Tuesday-words with silent e rule, wowrds with "2 vowels go walking, first vowels says it's name (it's long sound)
Wednesday-We concentrated on editing sentences-proper spelling and puctuation, using /ay/, /er/, and the use of quotation marks. We also played small group games reinforcing vowels usage, phonics, and simple sentence puntuation.
Thursday-We used the morning message to edit for punctuation, silent e, /ay/, and quotation marks. We also made some exciting progress with the use of "chunking"-seperating prefis/root words/suffixes into parts. I incorporated words from "Wind In The Willows" for this.
Monday"Dinosaur In Trouble"-First grade reading level-Writing response topic="A time when I (or someone else ) was in trouble." Looking for: proper sentence capitalization and punctuation. Mini-story beginning and ending. Proper spelling of high-use words(or word wall use).
Tuesday-"Windy Day"-Early Second grade level story about letter writing. Full of quotation and question marks. We will work on reading with inflection. We also worked on parts of a letter and wrote letters
Wednesday-"The Spelling Bee"- Using quotation marks , fluency and inflection. Follow up writing: quotation marks in talking balloons.
Thursday-"Stop That Rabbit" -/ed/, /ing/,/s/ endings, inflection with exclamation marks, and fluency. We also worked on identifying the main idea using "Tree Toad" a poem. They seem to really enjoy "Wind In The Willows". We reviewed the previous chapters and read through to chapter 7. I included discussion questions for you to take home.
MondayWe wrote in response to the Dinosaur In Trouble story..."Wind & The Willows-Choral reading-Mole went into the Wild Wood-lots of difficult, but enriching vocabulary! The kids like it, but continue to need much assistance-so we're choral reading and orally responding to comprehension questions.
Tuesday-Writing a friendly letter/Parts of a letter
Wednesday-Using quotation marks in talking balloons.
Thursday-We played vowel bingo for our last class together.
